After Hours Worker

What do you do in your role at The Salvation Army?

I’m an after hours support worker, working nightshift.  I look after the men during the night ensuring their safety and security.  Sometimes I break up squabbles or simply have a coffee and chat which is something I really enjoy.  I also prepare breakfast for the guys for the next day.

How long have you been involved with The Salvation Army?

Approaching some 16 to 17 years now and I have enjoyed every minute.

What is the most rewarding part of working in homelessness services for The Salvation Army?

The most rewarding part is just being with the guys and listening to their stories.  Basically being someone they can talk to without fear of judgment or ridicule.  I respect that I come to work in their home and my life is greatly enriched by these people and their experiences.

Why do you do what you do?

This is the right job for me as I once was homeless when I was fourteen.  I admire the work the Salvos do in all areas of homelessness and value the beliefs of the organisation – compassion by hearing and responding to pain with love, respect by affirming the worth and capacity of all people, and diversity by embracing differences as a gift.
