What do you do in your role at The Salvation Army?
I work with asylum seekers and refugees who have recently arrived in Australia and I coordinate all the volunteers who make our work possible.
What support does your program provide?
Often asylum seekers and newly arrived refugees are unable to afford even the basic necessities so our service provides grocery or furniture vouchers, food, clothing, blankets and other basic household goods. We also run English language programs and a mentoring program.
Why do you do what you do for work?
I don’t see what I do as work because I’m supporting people who are coming from a similar past to me. I was a refugee from Sierra Leone and I came to Australia from a refugee camp in Ghana 11 years ago. It’s a privilege for me to work with people who have also experienced this and to be able to share some of my practical experiences to help them.
