What do you do in your role at The Salvation Army?

I lead a team at a homelessness residential service that provides support to the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We support people living on-site in units and also in crisis houses in the surrounding areas. Everyone we work with is experiencing homelessness for a variety of reasons including family violence, financial pressure, a loss of a job or ill health.

Why do you do what you do for work?

I believe that in an affluent country like Australia there is no excuse for people, particularly children, to be sleeping in cars or in substandard accommodation. I believe access to a safe place to live is a basic human right so that’s why I’m a social worker.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I’m inspired each day by the resilience and determination of our residents, especially the parents who do whatever it takes to keep some normality in the lives of their children when faced with the stress and chaos of being homeless.
